Let’s celebrate the beginning of a new year, Japanese style! Families will explore and experience Japanese New Year traditions such as: 1. Making and eating Mochi (a.k.a. Rice Cake, a celebratory food with various meanings, such as longevity) 2. Creating your own Shimekazari (New Year decoration placed at the top of entrances to welcome the God of the New Year, who brings good luck.) 3. Playing Fukuwarai (a popular children’s game played during New Year celebrations) 4. Writing your own Kakizome (It is the first calligraphy writing of the New Year, typically words or phrases that reflect people’s hopes, dreams, and aspirations for the coming year.)
